An Open Forum
"Towards e-Community for Hong Kong Air Cargo Logistics "

organized by
Center of Cyber Logistics

The global trend of e-commerce and the use of information technology are creating new challenges and opportunities for agents of the air cargo industry. With careful planning and cooperation among industry agents and with e-commerce as an enabler, the air cargo industry can be transformed into one that can provide customization to individual shippers at the cost level of mass production. The key components of air cargo logistics are in the setting up of a fourth-party e-community platform and a fourth-party logistics center. This platofrm provides an integrated Web-based environment for third-party logistics service providers to trade and manage their logistics processes.

The Center of Cyber Logistics foresees the need of bringing the issues in focus for the industry and the government to discuss collectively in a collaborative environment. Thus, the Center initiates this open forum for all constituents in the air cargo industry to exchnage ideas and opinions on imperative issues. With that, the Center will press on with investigation to provide constructive polcy and recommendations to government and the industry alike.

The agenda of the forum will include an overview of impacts of e-commerce on the air cargo logistics industry, an introduction to the e-community platform along with its functionalities including information exchange, logistics services trading, and business management facilitation, and a demonstration of such a platform. We will also discuss the use of IT in customs and other administrative procedures. The forum will conclude with a roundtable discussion on common issues and plans to achieve the logistics e-community.
